1887: Princess Miriam Likelike, sister of King Kalakaua, dies.
1908: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that a "splendid moonshine still" was found in a raid on a residence on the Pali road.
1914: The steamer Matsonia arrives in Honolulu on its maiden trip from California. Capt. William Matson, president of Matson Navigation Co., his wife, and his daughter, Lurline, were aboard.
1915: The Board of Health bans feather dusters of the fiesta variety during the Mid Pacific Carnival as unsanitary. It had been the custom for crowds surging on the streets to carry the little dusters, affectionately chucking them into the faces of those who passed.
1917: The War Department says a flying squadron is to be established at Honolulu. Sixteen seaplanes are to be sent from San Diego to form the major portion of the squadron. Stringent military precautions are taken at Pearl Harbor and other garrisons as war fears build.
1941: Striking bus workers agree to use their own cars to get schoolchildren to their classes. The workers said they had no desire to inconvenience schoolchildren.
1942: O'ahu public schools reopen after seven weeks of "special vacation" because of the outbreak of war in the Pacific.
1960: Lava from the Puna eruption that began Jan. 13 begins moving into the $1 million Kapoho Beach Lots resort development.
1976: Three Hawai'i tour industry leaders and the state's three largest travel companies are fined a total of $170,000 by a federal court judge for criminally conspiring to fix tour prices for individual travelers.
