Teen accused of beating uncle, 51

Advertiser Staff

A 19-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the beating of his 51-year-old uncle in Kuli'ou'ou Valley.

Family members told police that the suspect had been acting strangely at their home. At about 1:55 p.m., the younger man was seen beating the older man in the front yard.

The family attempted to separate them, but failed, and called police. Officers arrived and arrested the younger man after a brief struggle.

The older man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition with head and chest injuries. The 19-year-old was booked on one count of attempted murder.

Charges were pending last night.

A 26-year-old man was killed last night in a one-car crash on H-3 Freeway shortly before 9 p.m., Emergency Medical Services personnel said.

District Chief Jason Kaneshiro said the car crashed into a road barrier and the driver died at the scene. The driver was heading in the Kailua-bound direction between the Likelike offramp and the Kamehameha Highway offramp when he hit the barrier. Bystanders said the man was traveling at a high rate of speed, EMS personnel said.

The freeway was closed in the Kailua-bound direction between the two offramps while traffic officers investigated the crash. There was no other information available at press time.
