1907: The Japanese government says it will increase the number of permits for immigrants to Hawai'i to 4,000 a month.
1911: The first Chinese public school, the Mun Lun School, opens in Honolulu. It was on Achi Lane, between Beretania and Bishop lane.
1915: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that by a Navy order, a fleet of four submarines home-ported at Honolulu Harbor are to be permanently based at the naval station at Pearl Harbor.
1959: Ground is broken for Honolulu’s new $24 million
jet-age airport.
1966: President Lyndon B. Johnson arrives in Hawai'i for three days of meetings with South Vietnamese Premier Nyugen Cao Ky and top U.S. military leaders.
1972: Artist Madge Tennent dies at the age of 82. At the time of her death, many art critics considered her the most important individual contributor to art in Hawai'i in the 20th century.
1976: The University of Hawai'i reinstates four basketball players whom the NCAA had declared ineligible after their participation in a television commercial.
1990: The state starts its after-school A-plus Program.
