Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A 30-year-old Hilo man died today from injuries he suffered when the car he was driving ran off Akaka Falls Road last night and overturned in a pasture.

Police said the driver and two passengers in the vehicle, a 32-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, were all ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. today at Hilo Medical Center, but police are withholding the man's name until his next of kin can be notified. The two passengers in the vehicle were listed in satisfactory condition.

Police said 30-year-old was driving a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner MPVH east on Akaka Falls Road about a half-mile west of Honomu Road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned shortly before 9:39 p.m.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, and none of the three was wearing a seatbelt.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The death was the fifth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to six at the same time last year.
