Kaua'i senator first to file for Case's seat

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — State Sen. Gary Hooser, D-7th (Kaua'i, Ni'ihau), this morning became the first candidate to file for Rep. Ed Case's second-district congressional seat.

Case has announced he will run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Daniel Akaka.

Hooser said he is a traditional Democrat whose positions are similar to Case's on social issues, but who is generally more liberal than Case on other issues.

"Ending the war in Iraq, protecting the freedoms and privacy of individual Americans and dealing with a monumental federal budget deficit are issues that weight heavily on all citizens" and which Hooser hopes to address, he said.
