  • Professional Mariner magazine has named Pasha Hawai'i Transport Lines' ship, the MV Jean Anne, Ship of the Year for 2005. In its annual American Ship Review issue, the magazine praised the 579-foot roll-on/roll-off cargo carrier for bringing new and competitive life to Hawai'i-West Coast trade lanes. The ship is recognized for its ability to carry cars, trucks and buses, and cargo — including household goods and construction equipment — in roll-on/roll-off mode of handling. The Jean Anne can carry more than 3,000 vehicles on 10 cargo decks, at speeds of 20 knots (23 mph). She calls every two weeks in Hilo, Kahului and Honolulu, with an additional stop in Nawiliwili as needed.

  • McDonald's Corp. has honored Hawai'i franchise owner/operator VICTOR LIM with its 2005 Government Relations Leadership Award. Lim began his McDonald's career in 1974 as manager trainee. He worked his way up through the company and bought his first McDonald's restaurant, on Fort Street Mall, in 1987. Since then, he has acquired six more McDonald's. McDonald's restaurants of Hawai'i has 86 eateries and more than 3,500 employees in Hawai'i, Guam and Saipan. More than 80 percent of the nation's 13,700 McDonald's are independently-owned local franchises.

  • REX JOHNSON, president and chief executive officer of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, has been named Sales Person of the Year by the Sales and Marketing Executives International, Honolulu chapter. Each year, the group selects the person who has best promoted, and contributed to, Hawai'i's image. Johnson was honored, in part, for shepherding the tourism authority through the tourism uncertainties following the 2001 World Trade Center disaster and the breakout of SARS in 2003; for championing a statewide 10-year tourism marketing plan, and his part in contracting sales and marketing activities for the Hawai'i Convention Center.
