1913: The first books are checked out at the new Library of Hawai'i, which opened on Feb. 1.
1932: Hawai'i is at war this morning, the story said on the front page of The Advertiser. Early in the morning, planes took off from O'ahu and flew out to sea to try to spot the approaching enemy. The military had begun war games to test the defenses of Hawai'i.
1940: Historic Volcano House, overlooking Kilauea Crater, is destroyed by a fire fanned by a stiff mountain breeze. The fire began in the kitchen.
1952: King George VI dies at age 56. His oldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, 25, becomes queen.
1960: Some 5,000 people pay their last respects to Island singer Alfred Apaka at his Nu'uannu Park Mortuary wake.
1965: The Navy sets off a 500-ton charge of TNT on Kaho'olawe to test the effects of high explosives on warship instruments.
1976: Bruce O'Neil is removed as University of Hawai'i basketball coach after accepting responsibility for a television commercial featuring four players.
1996: John Nahale Miranda is shot and killed by police after holding five people hostage in a Sand Island office for seven hours. Miranda wounded his former boss and kept a shotgun duct-taped to the head of a former co-worker. The city was glued to live television coverage of the ordeal.
2004: Concrete workers at Ameron Hawaii go on strike after contract talks stall.
