$186M proposed for state military projects

By Dennis Camire
Advertiser Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — The Navy would spend $30 million to dredge a channel in Pearl Harbor as part of $186 million in military construction projects for Hawai'i next year under President Bush's proposed budget.

Under the budget proposal, released yesterday, the Navy would deepen the West Loch channel for ammunition ships.

Other Pearl Harbor items include $13 million for a satellite communications system site; $4.3 million for a helicopter fighting training building; and $7.7 million for an environmental preventive medical building.

Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i, said the proposed spending was not enough "to meet the needs of the troops and commands based in Hawai'i."

Also proposed:

  • $28.5 million for a C-17 transport fuel cell nose dock and road restoration at Hickam.

  • $42 million for unit operational buildings at the Army's Schofield Barracks.

  • $12.5 million for a child development center at Schofield.

  • $47 million for a National Security Agency regional security operations center at Kunia.
