Tire comes off, injures child walking to school

Advertiser Staff

A 4-year-old boy was critically injured this morning when a tire came off a boat trailer, rolled down an incline and hit him in the face.

The boy was walking along Bougainville Drive with his mother and younger brother toward the Navy Keiki Hale School when the accident occurred at about 7:20 a.m., said Ramona Sergent, the school's assistant director.

The injured boy was taken by city paramedics to The Queen's Medical Center and was first listed in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.

The Navy Keiki Hale School is adjacent to Radford High School and provides services in nursery school through second grade to children whose parents are in all branches of the military as well as children from civilian families.

Sergent said the boy had not yet reached the school, which is adjacent to Radford High School, when the accident happened.
