The multi-artist instrumental and vocal compilation "Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 1" has won the best Hawaiian music album Grammy.

The award went to producers Daniel Ho and Wayne Wong. A handful of musicians on the compilation also made the trek to the podium. Co-producer Paul Konwiser was not in attendance.

The Grammy was awarded this afternoon in an untelevised ceremony at the Los Angeles Convention Center, just before this evening's prime-time awards telecast. This is the second year that a Grammy for best Hawaiian music album has been awarded. The category was initiated last year, after a lengthy organizing and lobbying effort on the part of Hawaiian music supporters.

Veteran slack-key artist George Kahumoku, who contributed two tracks to the live album, appeared at the podium and asked the crowd to applaud Lahainaluna High School on its 175th anniversary this year. He is an instructor at the school.

Producer Ho, heading into interviews with national and international press after learning of his Grammy win today, said he was "over the moon" with the win.

North Shore singer-songwriter Jack Johnson was shut out in both categories he was nominated in. In the best male pop performance category, Stevie Wonder won for "From the Bottom of My Heart." In the best pop collaboration with vocals category, Gorillaz featuring De La Soul won for "Feel Good Inc."

The soundtrack for the Oscar-nominated film "Good Night, and Good Luck" snagged a best jazz vocal album Grammy for Dianne Reeves. Honolulu Symphony Pops conductor Matt Catingub arranged the music, accompanied Reeves on saxophone and wrote an original song for the "Good Night, and Good Luck" soundtrack.
