Cyanotech reports quarterly loss

Kona-based Cyanotech Corp. today reported a net loss of $294,000, or 1 cent per share, for the quarter ending Dec. 31 2005, compared with net income of $326,000, or 2 cents per share, for the same period a year earlier.

Cyanotech is a world leader in producing high-value nutrition and health products from microalgae.

Sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2006 fell 27 percent to $2.3 million from a year earlier. Sales for the quarter were, down 7 percent from the preceding quarter.

"Lower revenue for the third quarter resulted from reduced order levels of spirulina products and continued reduced demand for NatuRose in Japan aquaculture," said Gerald Cysewski, Cyanotech chairman, president and chief executive officer. He added that there was increased demand for other Cyanotech products, including BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin.



Wholesale gas cap to drop 10 cents next week

Hawai'i's wholesale price cap will drop 10 cents a gallon on Monday to $1.95 for regular on O'ahu, according to the state Public Utilities Commission.

That price excludes taxes and retail mark-up. The law caps wholesale prices, however, retailers can still charge whatever prices they want.



O'o awards ceremony set for May 5

The Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce will present its annual O'o awards at a luncheon ceremony May 5 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom.

The theme of this year's ceremony is "Wai Ola A Kane, The Life-giving Waters of Kane." Kane is the god of procreation in Hawaiian mythology.

Inaugurated in 1976, the O'o awards are presented to "outstanding Native Hawaiians who, through their talents, have made significant contributions to improve our communities and the status of Native Hawaiians," according to the NHCC.



State tax department expands hotline service

The State Department of Taxation has expanded its customer service hours for telephone calls during the 2006 tax season.

From Feb. 15-April 28 the phone lines will be open from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays.

On O'ahu the number to call is 587-4242; from the Neighbor Islands and Mainland taxpayers may call 800 222-3229. Questions also can be e-mailed to taxpayer.service@hawaii.gov.
