1906: The Territorial Board of Education decides only English could be used in teaching in public schools. They turned down a request to use a public school during after-school hours to open a school for the Japanese children of the 'Ewa plantation.
1932: In a continuation of the war games begun two days earlier, "enemy" forces managed surprise attacks on Pearl Harbor and Schofield Barracks,
1968: More than 5,000 ILWU pineapple workers strike plantations and canneries on five islands after a midnight deadline passed without a contract agreement.
1973: Seven U.S. senators, including Hawai'i's Daniel K. Inouye, are named to the Senate's select committee investigating Watergate.
1991: The Advertiser reports that the combined effects of a Mainland recession and the Gulf War are taking a toll on Hawai'i's economy. The impact includes layoffs and shorter working hours for hotel workers, a 10 percent drop in business at Hawai'i's largest shopping center, and a 25 percent increase in unemployment claims.
