Brigham Young junior guard Rashaun Broadus was named the co-Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Broadus, a 2002 Mililani graduate, helped the Cougars to two conference wins last week. He had game-highs of 15 points, including 13 in the second half, and six assists in a 77-71 win over New Mexico as the Cougars ended the Lobos' 21-game home win streak.

In a 65-59 win over Air Force, Broadus had 13 points, including 11 in the second half, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

MEN'S SWIMMING

  • UC Irvine sophomore Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) earned his second Big West Swimming and Diving Male Athlete of the Week honor after his performance in a dual meet with UC San Diego in the last weekend of January.

    Tom won the 200 butterfly (1:50.16), 200 breaststroke (2:05.68) and 200 individual medley (1:51.94).

    At a dual meet with Cal State Northridge Friday, Tom broke his own UCI record in the 100 butterfly in 48.78. He also won the 100 backstroke (50.67).

    Sophomore Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) won the 100 freestyle (52.64) and the 100 butterfly (54.46) with the 17th fastest time in the country for an NCAA "B" cut time.

  • Occidental (Los Angeles) senior Andrew Sutton (Punahou '01 of Wai'alae-Kahala) placed in the top three in three events in a dual meet with Pomona-Pitzer Friday.

    He was second in the 100 freestyle (49.77) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:51.09), and his 400 freestyle relay team finished second (3:28.85).

    Freshman Santosh "Toshi" Baker (King Kekaulike '05 of Makawao) was third in the 200 butterfly (2:11.01) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.62), and his 400 medley relay team won in 3:56.20.

    MEN'S WATER POLO

  • Stanford sophomore 2-meter defender Forrest Schwartz (Punahou '03) and UCLA senior attacker David Pietsch (Punahou '01 of Manoa) were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo All-Academic Team. Schwartz earned a 3.59 GPA and Pietsch a 3.19.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Washington University (St. Louis) freshman guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay (Punahou '05) hit two free throws with nine seconds left to seal a 66-62 win over No. 24 University of Rochester Sunday.

    With Washington down 12 at halftime, Dacanay made back-to-back 3-pointers in the second half, finishing with 14 points, two assists and two steals.

    She had 10 points, five assists and two steals in an 83-58 win over Carnegie Mellon Friday.

  • Cal State L.A. senior guard Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) scored a game-high 23 points in a 58-54 loss to Chico State Jan. 27.

  • Menlo (Calif.) sophomore guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) was named the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week, her third honor this season.

    She had 29 points and 11 rebounds in a 73-68 win over Cal State East Bay Saturday, and 20 points in a 70-32 win over Simpson Jan. 31.

    BASEBALL

  • Diablo Valley (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) sophomore first baseman Kepa Wong (Aiea '04) hit two home runs and had seven RBIs, batting 4 for 5 in a 13-6 win over Mendocino College Jan. 28.

  • Junior second baseman Keoni Ruth (Kamehameha '03) batted 4 for 11 with a triple and four runs in host San Diego's three-game sweep of top-ranked and defending national champion Texas.

  • Freshman catcher Kip Masuda (Mid-Pacific '05) went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI to help No. 16 Long Beach State beat No. 17 USC, 8-6, Sunday to complete a three-game sweep at home.

  • Junior second baseman Jonathan Sakurai ('Aiea '03), a transfer from Chicago State, batted 3 for 9 with two doubles and two steals to aid Cal State-Northridge's three-game sweep of visiting Nevada.

  • Cabrillo College (Aptos, Calif.) has welcomed its Hawai'i players — third baseman Eli Chee (Kamehameha '05), first baseman Marc Factora (Iolani '05) and pitcher Eric Price (Kamehameha '05) — by featuring them on the cover of the school's baseball Web site: www.cabrillo.edu/academics/athletics/baseball. All three are freshmen and their coach is former big league pitcher Andy Messersmith.

  • UC Irvine freshman libero Brent Asuka (Iolani '05) had a match-high 12 digs in a 30-22, 30-28, 30-18 sweep over UC Santa Cruz Thursday.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Idaho State junior defender Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) and Portland State junior midfielder Kari Otani (Maui '03 of Kahului) were named to the Big Sky Conference 2005 Fall All-Academic Team. Loo is majoring in biology and Otani is a physical activity and exercise major.
