Maui councilwoman Tavares will run for mayor

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County Council member Charmaine Tavares today announced she will challenge Mayor Alan Arakawa's re-election bid in this year's election.

The Hana-born Tavares, whose father, the late Hannibal Tavares, was mayor in the 1980s, is a five-term councilwoman who must leave office because of term limits.

She vowed to strictly adhere to state campaign rules and said she will limit donations to half the $4,000 maximum allowed by law for the mayor' race.

Tavares said her top priorities are balancing Maui's economic interests with the need to preserve the environment and "aloha," encouraging renewable energy, and making government more efficient.
