“Almost all of Honolulu” went to the beach on the new Rapid Transit line, according to the Feb. 9, 1903, Pacific Commercial Advertiser.

1910: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on a squabble over the width of sidewalks in Kaimuki. There was one proposal that they be 12 feet wide, but it was reported that a majority of property holders in the district wanted them 8 feet wide.

1940: The Public Works Committee of the Honolulu Board of Supervisors recommends approval of plans for the transfer of 70 acres of land at Honouliuli to the Army in exchange for a right of way through Fort DeRussy for the extension of Ala Moana to Kalakaua Avenue.

1942: Hawai'i goes to daylight-saving time because of a wartime order signed by President Roosevelt. Blackout hours also changed. Blackout restrictions now apply from 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.

1957: Dairymen's Assn. Ltd. said it is closing its Waialae Dairy and opening a new dairy at Kawailoa. The Wai'alae land is to be subdivided by Bishop Estate for a "fine home" neighborhood.

1960: A sharp earthquake causes a portion of Halema'uma'u pit to drop 200 feet.

1968: The U.S. Department of Interior declares Diamond Head, its slopes and its shoreline a registered national landmark.

1983: The state shuts down and puts into receivership two industrial loan companies, Manoa Finance Co. Inc. and Great Hawaiian Financial Corp., freezing a total $55 million in deposits.

2001: A Navy submarine, the USS Greeneville, slices through the hull of a Japanese fisheries training ship off O'ahu, sinking the Ehime Maru within minutes and killing nine aboard.
