Kane'ohe Bay Marine killed in Afghanistan

A 20-year-old Kane'ohe Bay Marine was killed yesterday in Afghanistan when the vehicle in which he was travelling rolled over during a combat patrol near Jalalabad, the Marines said.

Pfc. Matthew L. Bertolino, of Hampstead, N.H. was assigned to Alpha Co., 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, according to a news release from Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.

The accident is under investigation, the release said.

Bertolino joined the Marines on January 2005, reported to Hawai'i on July 2005 and was deployed to Afghanistan last month, the release said. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, it said.

He is survived by his father and mother, who have not released a photo at this time.
