Constance Lau to head HEI; Clarke retires

Hawaiian Electric Industries announced today that longtime Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert Clarke will retire in May and be replaced by banking executive Constance Lau.

HEI also announced that local attorney and HEI director Jeffrey Watanabe will become chairman of the company's board.

Clarke has served as the company's chairman and chief executive officer for the past 15 years. He joined HEI in 1987 as vice president for strategic planning.

Lau, who serves as trustee of the Kamehameha Schools, is president and chief executive officer of HEI's bank subsidiary, American Savings Bank. She joined the company in 1984 as assistant corporate counsel.
