Saint Louis turns back Punahou in ILH, 58-49

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Scott Smith scored 17 points and Jeremiah Masoli added 13 to lead Saint Louis past visiting Punahou, 58-49, last night in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season finale for both teams.

Each team finished 8-4, but Saint Louis clinched third place by beating Punahou twice in the regular season.

Saint Louis will have the No. 1 seed and homecourt advantage in next week's ILH third-place tournament to decide the league's third and final berth in the state tournament.

Kamehameha (10-1) and Iolani (9-2) have clinched the ILH's two automatic berths and will meet tonight in the regular season finale at Iolani. Tipoff is at 8.

If Kamehameha wins, it clinches the ILH title. If Iolani wins, the teams will meet again either Wednesday or Thursday in a winner-take-all game.

Saint Louis, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, took the lead for good last night on Scott Smith's three-point play that made it 34-32 with 3:57 remaining in the third period. The Crusaders opened the fourth quarter with an 8-4 run to build the lead to 48-41 with 3:33 left.

The No. 3-ranked Buffanblu closed to 50-45 on Kyle Whitford's layup with 1:40 remaining, but Smith and Kulia Aiona scored on layups to break Punahou's full-court press and seal the victory.

Miah Ostrowski led the Buffanblu with 18 points. Punahou made 13 of 16 free-throw attempts.
