1899: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on the front page that Princess Ka'iulani has returned from the Big Island on the Mauna Loa. The princess, the paper said, returned to her 'Ainahau home suffering from inflammatory rheumatism.

1910: Congress decides to let the voters of Hawai'i decide whether a prohibition law for Hawai'i should be enacted.

1930: The Advertiser's new building at Advertiser Square and the new studio of radio station KGU on the roof of the Advertiser building are formally opened.

1930: The Kalakaua Avenue bridge across the Ala Wai opens to traffic.

1973: North Vietnam begins releasing American prisoners-of-war.

1988: Royal Elementary fourth-grader Jiezhao Li disappears while selling chili tickets to raise money for a class trip.
