Airport still without many cabbies

By Loren Moreno

Visitors arriving at the Honolulu International Airport should expect to wait at least 20 to 25 minutes for a taxi after cabbies did not show up for work again today, said state Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa.

Customers normally wait 5 to 10 minutes at the airport, said Ishikawa.

Airport-based taxi drivers began their work stoppage yesterday to protest what they called unfair practices by Ampco System Parking, which holds the state contract as the airport taxi dispatcher.

Approximately 300 drivers did not show up for work today, according to Abraham Martin, a taxi driver who organized the work stoppage. DOT officials could not confirm that number.

Ampco officials could not be reached for immediate comment.
