1929: The Honolulu Advertiser reports plans are almost complete for a road to the summit of Haleakala. "No scenic road in the world could unroll before the traveler a more gorgeous panorama," The Advertiser said.
1956: Workmen on the $2 million Nu'uanu Pali tunnel project, who started at the Kailua portal, break through to daylight at the Honolulu end of the 500-foot tunnel.
1964: A Hawaiian Airlines Convair 440 overshoots the end of the runway at Hilo's General Lyman Field and crash lands in the brush. Three passengers are hospitalized but there are no serious injuries.
1971: Cambodian Premier Lon Nol, suffering from a stroke that paralyzed half his body, arrives at Tripler Hospital for treatment.
1998: One hundred years of sugar history comes crashing down when the 150-foot-tall smokestack of the century-old Aiea Sugar Mill is demolished.
