TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Winter Olympics," 4-5 p.m., 6-10 p.m., midnight-early morning, NBC. The men's figure-skating contest begins with short programs today and long ones on Thursday. There're also some gold events tonight. That includes the men's combined (downhill and slalom) skiing and women's luge and 500-meter speed skating.

"Nova: Jewel of the Earth," 8 p.m., PBS. When he was 12, David Attenborough hosts this fascinating look at amber, which often freezes the past inside. One gem contains an insect believed to be 150 million years old.

OF NOTE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. On the second hour of competition, the singers form — sometimes reluctantly — into groups.

"The Price is Right Million-Dollar Spectacular," 7 p.m., CBS. The show borrows a prime-time hour, nudging "NCIS" to 10 p.m.

"Gilmore Girls," 7 p.m., WB. Luke and Lorelai are supposed to vacation with Rory and Logan. Luke, however, dislikes Logan.

"A Charlie Brown Valentine," 7 p.m., ABC. In a story assembled from the late Charles Schulz's comic strips, Charlie is hopeful about seeing the little redheaded girl on Valentine's Day.

"Commander in Chief," 8 p.m., ABC. When Mac's husband goes to a reception alone, he causes a fuss that makes headlines. Meanwhile, Templeton tries to stop Mac's plan for the homeless.

"Dr. Phil: A Primetime Special: Love Smart," 8 p.m., CBS. Phil McGraw gives romance advice to two people — one of them "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul.

"House," 8 p.m., Fox. This brilliant show almost goes too far this week in letting the Dr. Gregory House character crumble. Discouraged by his decision to break up with his one true love Stacy, he fumes, growls, and frightens the parents of a patient. This is a harsh episode in what's still a great show.

"Boston Legal," 9 p.m., ABC. One story involves a girl suing a private school for discrimination; another involves a teen rape victim who is pregnant.
