1883: The statue of Kamehameha I is unveiled in front of Ali'iolani Hale.
1910: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports the women of Hawai'i intend to be heard in the settling of the prohibition question and a number of them have cabled Washington asking to be allowed to vote on equal terms with the men in the planned prohibition plebiscite. One of the women involved in the petition is Mrs. Walter Frear, wife of the governor.
1938: Kahuku Plantation announces plans for a new hospital. It was expected to cost $75,000 to build the facility.
1942: All Hawai'i men between the ages of 20 and 45 who had not previously registered for selective service must appear before draft boards within three days as part of the most sweeping registration for military service in American history.
1942: Army officials announce that several hundred "enemy aliens" who have been interned in Hawai'i will be soon sent to the Mainland.
1952: Workers strike at three Matson hotels in Waikiki: The Royal Hawaiian, Moana and Surfrider. Both sides exchanged charges of bad faith bargaining.
1954: The Army announces it will spend $400,000 to bring Schofield Barracks to "a state of readiness."
1973: Twenty returning prisoners of war released by North Vietnam stop in Hawai'i briefly en route to Travis Air Force Base, Calif.
1986: The Rt. Rev. Harry Kennedy, who served a quarter century as the sixth Episcopal bishop of Hawai'i, dies at the age of 84.
