Classic to showcase high school softball

Fifty-two high school senior softball players from 26 O'ahu schools will showcase their skills next week in the inaugural New City Nissan Goodwill Softball Classic. Players from state champion Pearl City and runner-up Mililani will be included, along with players from Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha.

The four-team round-robin tournament begins Monday at 9 a.m. at the University of Hawai'i's Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and concludes with a doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Central O'ahu Regional Park. Admission is free.

The Classic is sanctioned by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association, ILH and O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

BASKETBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO SHOOTS DOWN CHAMINADE

Travis Sobers scored a game-high 25 points as hot-shooting Hawai'i-Hilo sank cold-shooting Chaminade, 82-69, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at McCabe Gym.

Sobers hit 8 of 11 shots from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and the Vulcans made 50 percent of its field-goal attempts (28 of 56) to improve to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in the PacWest.

Joe Travis added 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Justin Griffin contributed 18 points for Hilo.

Zack Whiting scored 23 points for the conference-leading Silverswords (15-8, 7-3), who shot 33.8 percent (23 of 68) from the field. Chaminade attempted 38 3-pointers, but made just 12.

Chris Reaves added 12 points and four assists, and Corey Campbell had 10 points for the Silverswords.
