Kaimuki will attempt to win its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball championship since 1993 tomorrow after racing past Eastern Division rival Kalaheo, 56-42, in last night's semifinals at McKinley.

The Bulldogs (11-2) will play defending champion Kahuku (12-1) for the title at 7:30 p.m. at McKinley's Student Council Gym.

Kalaheo (10-4) will play Campbell (10-2) for third place at 5:30. All four teams have secured berths in next week's state tournament.

Kaimuki trailed 7-4 after one period last night but then rallied in the second quarter behind the outside shooting of senior wing Thomas Pyo, who scored 12 points to help the Bulldogs lead 28-17 at the break.

Jarrett Shiu's 3-pointer from the left wing started a 17-2 run, and Pyo added two 3-pointers, a baseline jumper and two layups, including one as time expired.

Contributing to the run was a third foul assessed to Mustangs center Tyler Caswell, a 6-foot-5 junior. Caswell was taken out with 5:59 remaining in the second period and sat out the remainder of the half.

Kaimuki center Shaun Dela Calzada also was saddled on the bench with foul trouble, but Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said the Bulldogs had the depth to not let his absence affect them.

"That's not an even trade, because they have a little more bodies that can do damage inside than we do," Furtado said. "But we were pressing from the beginning, even when we had the lead. They just played a better game than us tonight."

Pyo left the game with an ankle injury with 1:59 left in the third period and did not return. He finished with 15 points. Beau Albrechtson led Kaimuki with 16 points.
