UH regents want to hire McClain as president

In a surprise move today, a University of Hawai'i Board of Regents task group has recommended they suspend the search for a new president and begin negotiations with David McClain in the hope he will accept the UH presidency on a permanent basis.

The board expects to take up the recommendation in a special meeting within the next 10 days — and then begin negotiations with McClain.

Board chairwoman Kitty Lagareta reported this morning that the search firm had recommended they suspend a nationwide search and offer interim president McClain the job.

The regents expect to meet in March to pursue the issue.

McClain announced in late November that he would not be a candidate for the presidency.

However, in reaction to today's announcement from the regents, McClain said he is gratified and "open" to talking to the board, according to UH spokeswoman Carolyn Tanaka.

McClain has led the university since the ouster of former president Evan Dobelle in 2004.
