Hawai'i Pacific rallies past UH-Hilo, 63-56

Donnell Dobbins scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as Hawai'i Pacific rallied past Hawai'i-Hilo, 63-56, last night in a Pacific West Conference basketball game at Blaisdell Arena.
Audrius Peciukas, Finis Harwell and Rick Wilson each added 11 points, and Wilson also grabbed 10 rebounds for HPU (6-16, 2-6 PacWest).
Joe Travis scored 18 points for the Vulcans (15-8, 5-5). Justin Griffin, who scored 37 points in Hilo's two victories over HPU last week, was held to nine points on 4-for-19 shooting.
"Finis did a heck of a job guarding Griffin," said HPU coach Kelly Wells. "He took it upon himself to make sure he didn't do what he did the last two times out."
Elsewhere, Austin Smylie scored 33 points, Eric Boyce added 31 and Brigham Young-Hawai'i put on a torrid shooting performance to hold off visiting Grand Canyon, 116-110, at Cannon Activities Center.
Smylie hit 12 of 18 shots and Boyce went 7 for 11 as the Seasiders (12-9) shot 65.5 percent from the field (36 of 55).
Ryan Nelson scored 25 points and Noe Alonzo 23 for Grand Canyon (17-6).
BASEBALL
HAWAI'I-HILO LOSES TWO
Two ninth-inning rallies couldn't help Hawai'i-Hilo from dropping a doubleheader to visiting Washington State yesterday at Wong Stadium.
The Cougars (5-1) prevailed 13-12 and 9-7 as the Vulcans fell to 2-10.
In the opener, Jim Murphy capped a 4-for-5 day with a solo homer in the top of the 10th to win a game that featured 39 hits (18 by Hilo) and eight errors (five by Washington State) and took 3 hours, 53 minutes to complete.
Jimmy Crider had three hits and two RBIs for the Vulcans, who scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
In the nightcap, Hilo's Dayne Ogawa lined out to third with the tying runs on base. The Vulcans scored four runs on four hits to close to 9-7.
Tyler Curtis had three hits and two RBIs for Hilo.
SOFTBALL
HAWAI'I-MANOA SPLITS
Brandi Peiler batted 4 for 5 with three RBIs and Kristi Yoshizawa went 2 for 3 with four RBIs as Hawai'i routed Southern Utah, 11-6, yesterday to salvage a split of a doubleheader in Las Vegas.
Malama Manuma, Valana Manuma and Tyleen Tausaga each added two hits for the Rainbow Wahine (5-3).
Southern Utah (1-6) won the opener, 5-4, holding off a seventh-inning rally by UH.
Tausaga had two hits, including a two-run double in the seventh when the Rainbow Wahine rallied for three runs to close the deficit to one with one out. But Thunderbird reliever Ashley Christiansen got the final two outs to earn a save.
HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS
Leo Sing Chow pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated third-ranked Shippensburg (Pa.), 2-0, yesterday in the Schutt Division II Leadoff Classic at Phoenix.
Haunani Haasenritter and Meghan Jost homered for the Vulcans (5-3).
In an earlier game, Natalie Fujimoto hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh as Hilo rallied past Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-3.
Sing Chow batted 2 for 3.
