Steven Wright pitched a one-hitter in a duel against a former teammate to help Hawai'i beat Loyola Marymount, 3-1, yesterday at George C. Page Stadium in Los Angeles.

The junior right-hander pitched the first complete game of his collegiate career and first of the season for the Rainbows (7-2), winners of three in a row. Wright (2-0), who is from Moreno Valley in Southern California, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 10. He retired the final 16 in a row and 20 of the last 21, dispatching the Lions (2-6) in a swift two hours and seven minutes.

"He had great fastball command," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "He was amped to throw in front of his friends and family in his hometown."

The only run he allowed came in the first inning, when A.J. LaMonda doubled to left-center, stole third and scored on a two-out, fielding error by shortstop Joe Spiers. Only one other batter would reach second the rest of the way. DeAndre Miller was hit by a pitch in the third with one out, stole second, but Wright got LaMonda and Eric Farris on fly outs to left to end the inning. A two-out, throwing error by Spiers in the fourth allowed Brian Wilson to reach first, but he was the last batter to reach against Wright, who used 102 pitches.

Loyola Marymount sophomore right-hander Brad Meyers (0-2) was a teammate of Wright during the summer for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League. Meyers allowed three runs — two earned — nine hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

Robbie Wilder batted 4 for 5 — his second four-hit performance in as many games — scoring two runs, once after he led off with a triple in the fifth. Jon Hee and Spiers had two hits apiece for the Rainbows, who finished with 11 hits.

"He had a tremendous day," Trapasso said of Wilder, who batted leadoff. "He hit the ball on the ground, used his speed. He was our catalyst."

In the second, Hee led off with a double to left, took third on Jorge Franco's sacrifice and scored on Esteban Lopez's single to center to tie the game at 1.

In the third, Spiers led off with a single, but was caught stealing. Wilder beat out a single to third and took second on third baseman Casey Gordon's throwing error on the play. Derek DuPree grounded out to second to move Wilder to third and Justin Frash walked. Luis Avila's single to right scored Wilder to put UH ahead 2-1.

Wilder led off the fifth with a triple to right and scored when DuPree grounded out to second.

The series continues today at 9 a.m., Hawai'i time. The Rainbows will start Ian Harrington (0-1) against LMU's Daniel Macias (0-2). Both are left-handers.
