Now that Anna Miller's early-bird specials are back, Island residents are again flocking to this longtime Pearl City institution.

"We just started it up again this month," said Wade Hashizume, the restaurant's area manager for the past three decades. "We started it off slow but it's starting to quickly catch on again."

As a way to drum up business during what's usually a slow time (from 4 to 6:30 p.m.) at the restaurant, Hashizume introduced a variety of "Early Bird" specials last July.

"The response was amazing," he said. "We were only going to do it for a month, but the demand was too great."

It's not surprising, given that a New York steak costs less than $10, which includes a 10-ounce cut; soup or salad; rice, french fries, baked or whipped potato; and hot roll or cornbread.

Other meaty entrees include prime rib ($10.99) and T-Bone steak ($13.99).

While most early-bird dinners are available for only an hour during a specific allotted time, Anna Miller's special runs for more than two hours, giving it a distinct advantage over other eateries.

In addition to the two different cuts of steaks and the prime rib, guests can also choose from two carb-loaded plates: spaghetti and meatballs ($6.99) and pasta tossed in a meaty marinara sauce ($6.79). Both come complete with soup or salad and garlic bread or cornbread.

"All these specials offer great value," Hashizume said. "For the amount and quality of food they're all great deals."

This includes the chicken katsu entree ($7.99), which was recently added to the list.

Other early-bird specials include crunchy fish and chips ($7.99), chicken fried steak ($8.99) and a seafood combo ($10.99), consisting of deep-fried shrimp, scallops and fish fillet, all served with a side of zingy cocktail and tartar sauces.

Guests can also get a slice of fresh-baked pie for only 99 cents with their entree.
