No. 4 Tennessee routs UH softball team, 13-1

The University of Hawai'i softball team was hammered by No. 4 Tennessee, 13-1, yesterday on the final day of the UNLV Desert Classic at Las Vegas.

Hawai'i's Justine Smethurst held the Lady Vols scoreless through four innings before running into trouble. In the fifth, Tennessee (8-0) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs.

The Lady Vols, who had 17 hits, put the game away with six runs in the seventh.

Tanisha Milca had two hits for Hawai'i (7-6).

HPU SWEEPS 'SWORDS

Dayna Berry pitched a four-hit shutout as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Kailua High School.

In the second game, Courtney Kessell pitched two innings of scoreless relief as HPU beat Chaminade, 4-3.

HPU improved to 7-3; Chaminade dropped to 2-8.


TRACK & FIELD

UH WOMEN EXCEL

In preparation for next week's Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship, the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team had a number of solid performances at the Terry Albritton Memorial on Saturday at Cooke Field.

The Rainbow Wahine standouts were Novelle Murray (hammer throw, 172 feet, 4 inches), Patricia Gauthier (pole vault, 12-5 1/2), Emily Sheppard (high jump, 5-8 3/4), Annett Wichman (shot put, 47-9 1/2) and Candace Rosenthal (60-meter hurdles, 9.25 seconds).

The WAC championship is in Boise, Idaho.


FOOTBALL

SEUMALO ON OSU STAFF

Joe Seumalo, a Radford High and University of Hawai'i alum, has been named defensive line coach for Oregon State.

Seumalo, 39, left San Jose State, where he had coached the defensive line for one season.

Previously, Seumalo coached at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, UH, British Columbia of the Canadian Football League and Kaiser High. Seumalo played for UH from 1985-1988.
