Two arrested after van chase, crash

Two 19-year-old men were arrested yesterday afternoon after they allegedly crashed in a stolen van while being pursued by a the owner of a car that had been broken into at Makapu'u Point lookout.

The car owner and his family were near the car when they heard its alarm sound at 1:15 p.m. They then saw two men run from the area and get in a silver van, police said. The van took off on Kalaniana'ole Highway toward Hawai'i Kai, with the car owner in pursuit. The van driver lost control and ran off the highway near Sandy Beach.

The owner of the car that had been broken into and others detained the two men until police arrived.

Police said the van the two suspects were in had been reported stolen. Police reported finding a stolen moped inside the van along with several other items taken during other car break-ins.

The two men were arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and detaining stolen property.



Teen arrested in tie to park robbery

A 16-year-old boy was arrested yesterday morning as a suspect in the beating and robbery of a 25-year-old man at a park in the McCully area. A second boy remained at large this morning.

The victim told police he heard two boys talking loudly in the park about 3 a.m. and went to see what was happening. He said the boys challenged him to fight and when he declined, they punched him until he fell to the ground and then kicked him.

Police apprehended one of the suspects, who had the victim's cell phone, a short distance from the park and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

The victim, who police said appeared to be intoxicated, was treated and released at The Queen's Medical Center.
