BUSINESS BRIEFS
Residents can claim overdue IRS refunds

Advertiser Staff

Unclaimed refunds totaling more than $13 million are awaiting 10,700 Hawai'i residents who failed to file a federal tax return in 2002, the Internal Revenue Service announced today.

Residents who are owed a refund must file their 2002 return with the IRS no later than April 17.

The IRS estimates that the half of those who could claim refunds would receive more than $611.

In some cases, individuals had taxes withheld from their wages, or made payments against their taxes out of self-employed earnings, but had too little income to require filing a tax refund. Some taxpayers also may be eligible for the refundable earned income tax credit.
