On Feb. 21, 1899, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser printed a drawing of the new C. Brewer & Co. building, which was then under construction on Queen Street.

1906: President L.E. Pinkham of the Board of Health proposes reclamation of the Waikiki marshlands, including the banana and vegetable patches and the rice fields of the McCully tract and Mo'ili'ili.

1918: Immense activity is reported in the lava pit at Kila-uea. The lava lake is expected to overflow the main crater.

1927: The U.S. Supreme Court rules Hawai'i's language school law unconstitutional. The law required Japanese language schools to pay fees to the territory.

1955: Cooke Trust and Bishop Estate announce plans for a $5 million homes project in 'Aina Koa for veterans.

1962: Astronaut John Glenn travels around the Earth three times in America's first orbital space flight.

1968: Honolulu Symphony musicians walk out of rehearsal in a wildcat strike. It was the first strike in the orchestra's history. The strike was over wages and lasted one day.
