The State Capitol Architect Advisory Committee unveiled its plans in 1961 for the new Hawai'i Capitol, to serve in lieu of the neighboring 'Iolani Palace. House leaders liked the plan, but not the price tag.

1925: The Honolulu Advertiser reports that the Legislature has determined that the beach route will be used for the third unit of the Kamehameha highway, from the Waiahole bridge to Hale'iwa.

1965: Bus service begins between Kailua and Honolulu. It was started by a new company, Windward Transit Inc. Several attempts had been made to connect Kailua and Honolulu by bus, but competition from jitneys was strong.

1969: The new Fort Street Mall is dedicated downtown.

1980: A brash young American hockey team scores one of the biggest upsets in sports history and stuns the powerful Soviet hockey team 4-3 in the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y.

1986: Seven Philippine foreign service officers based in Hawai'i break with Ferdinand Marcos, saying they no longer recognize him to be the lawful president of the Philippines.

2001: University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones is critically injured in a car crash.
