Council OKs curbside recycling requirement

Advertiser Staff

The City Council unanimously passed Bill 72 today establishing a curbside recycling program for Honolulu, but some council members and residents testifying said the measure has been watered down.

The program, which would provide house-to-house pickup of recyclable items to homes that have been already provided with blue pickup containers, would not be mandated to take effect until July 2008. That's a full year later than originally proposed.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann's administration has opposed the measure, saying it would rather focus on green waste. The measure now goes to the mayor for his consideration.
