The history of today FEBRUARY 23

	Brother Joseph Dutton, who had worked with Hansen's Disease patients at Kalaupapa for half a century, was near death, The Honolulu Advertiser reported on Feb. 23, 1931. Dutton died on March 27, 1931.

1906: American-Hawaiian Steamship Co.'s steamer Nevadan sails from Kahului with 5,000 tons of raw sugar for the Hawaiian Refinery at Crockett, Calif. It is the first shipment of sugar from Hawai'i to be refined there.

1932: It is announced that development of Ala Moana park is to begin shortly.

1935: The Haleakala highway is dedicated and opened to the public. The ceremony was broadcast nationwide via KGU and the National Broadcast Company. An official checker clocked 304 automobiles into what The Advertiser called the world's highest parking space.

1952: The first contingent of a Marine air group arrives at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Air Station, newly redesignated after years as a Navy air station

1966: The developers of Ala Moana Center propose building three overpasses from the center over city streets to prevent traffic jams. Hawaiian Land Co. Ltd. said it would be willing to pay for the construction of overpasses spanning Kapi'olani Boulevard at Ke'eaumoku, Ala Moana at Pi'ikoi and Atkinson Drive just makai of the YMCA.

1981: A Circuit Court judge orders Clarence Shak's Transportation Inc. to repay all persons the amount they had paid into the firm's investment scheme that had promised a return of up to $4 for every $1 invested.

1994: A federal jury awards $1.2 billion to the thousands of victims of torture and executions under the regime of the late Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines.

2000: In a narrowly worded ruling in Rice v. Cayetano, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidates the Hawaiians-only voting system for trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
