Man seriously injured in Hilo police cellblock

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A 52-year-old Hilo man is in critical condition after falling in the Hilo police cellblock and striking his head on a concrete bed foundation, police said.

Police said the man had been arrested on allegations of abuse of a family or household member Wednesday, and had apparently been drinking.

As a police officer placed the man in a holding cell, the man allegedly attempted to leave the cellblock as an electronic cellblock door was closing. The police officer attempted to prevent the man from leaving the cellblock, and the prisoner fell and struck his head, police said.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, and later was flown to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police declined to release the names of the man or the officer, and said detectives have opened an investigation into the incident as an attempted assault on a law enforcement officer.
