Don Quijote completes purchase of Daiei stores

Japan-based retailer Don Quijote Co. yesterday completed its previously announced purchase of Hawai'i's four Daiei stores from The Daiei Inc.

Kozo Yamagishi, president of Daiei's local subsidiary The Daiei (USA) Inc., announced the transaction, which previously had been expected to close Feb. 8.

Yamagishi said Don Quijote has not decided on a new name for the stores or what changes it may make to store operations later.

"The new owner wants to assure the people of Hawai'i that no sudden or drastic changes will be made to the stores, merchandise or operations," Yama-gishi said in a statement. "You will not see any difference when you enter Daiei stores after the sale."

In time, however, Don Quijote may make physical improvements, adjust merchandise and introduce operational changes with its own flair, Yamagishi added.

No employees lost jobs or positions as part of the sale, which included Daiei (USA) wholesale affiliate Oriental Seafoods Inc.
