In 1984, Safeway Stores went to court as part of its long battle to bring in Mainland milk.

1912: This day's Pacific Commercial Advertiser is the first edition to include wireless dispatches. The dispatches were transmitted the previous evening to Kahuku and then phoned to The Advertiser around 11 p.m.

1914: John Sumner Ellis, then considered Hawai'i's premier tenor, dies of tuberculosis.

1941: Honolulu Rapid Transit employees remain on strike, but the company resumes limited bus service.

1951: Gump's announces it will close its Waikiki store after 25 years of business in Honolulu. The store was closed to settle the estate of Gump's founder A.L. Gump.

1953: Bishop Estate announces that 14 acres of land on the Waialae Golf Course in the vicinity of the first tee and with a waterfront acreage of 1,200 feet has been designated as a hotel site.

1961: Halema'uma'u erupts for eight hours.

1966: The 47-year-old Honolulu Community Chest votes itself out of existence and transfers its $2.3 million in assets to the newly formed Aloha United Fund.

1983: The federal Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians spreads blame from President Franklin Roosevelt to a long and ugly history of racism for the internment of 120,000 Japanese-Americans after the Pearl Harbor attack. The internment was a grave injustice, the commission said.

1989: Emperor Hirohito's funeral in Tokyo is attended by the largest number of world leaders ever gathered for such an event. Leaders from 163 nations attended the state funeral. Hirohito had far outlived all the other World War II-era leaders.

1989: Nine passengers are killed when the cargo door of United Airlines Flight 811 breaks open about 40 minutes after the 747 took off from Honolulu, bound for Auckland.

1994: Two ka'ai, woven sennet baskets containing remains of Hawaiian chiefs, are discovered to have been removed from the Bishop Museum.
