KAHULUI, Maui — Well-known community volunteer and Kiwanis Club member Robert F. "Bob" Love of Kihei died yesterday in a two-car wreck on Kuihelani Highway.

Police said Love, 85, was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus when he pulled onto the highway from the Maui Lani Parkway at about 1:15 p.m. and collided with a 1991 Ford F-250 pickup truck headed toward Lahaina. Love died at the scene. His wife, Lois, was also in the car. She and the driver of the pickup were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Lois Love was in stable condition. The other driver's condition was not known.

Love was a retired Realtor and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Maui since 1971, according to friend Don Bartholomew, 2005 club president. The Maui club is the second-oldest Kiwanis group in the state, and its members include some of the island's most influential figures. Love headed the club in 1977 and was a regular volunteer at Maui Memorial.

Bartholomew said Love was a familiar sight in his hospital volunteer's shirt. "He was a very giving, caring, community-oriented person and a very nice gentleman," he said.

Love's death is Maui County's fourth traffic fatality of the year, compared with one at this time a year ago.
