The Pacific Commercial Advertiser's front page on Jan. 1, 1900, was a New Year's greeting to readers.

1903: The first message is telegraphed over the Pacific Cable from the Mainland to Hawai'i, marking the first "real time" connection between the continental United States and the Islands.

1913: Honolulu's first parcel post package was received at the post office for delivery. It was an insured parcel to a Mainland address.

1933: The Honolulu Advertiser publishes front-page editorial that is a plea to save the Royal Hawaiian Band. The Board of Supervisors was proposing to disband it.

1975: A federal jury convicts four former officials of the Nixon administration of conspiracy to obstruct justice in the Watergate cover-up. Former attorney general John Mitchell, and former White House officials John Ehrlichman and H.R. Haldeman are convicted on all charges.

1988: East Honolulu and Windward O'ahu mop up after a New Year's Eve flood that caused an estimated $34 million in damage. Waimanalo got 17 inches of rain in a 24-hour period.
