1936: Stevedore strike against Matson ends in Hilo.
1952: Interscholastic League takes steps to de-emphasize high school football after four people are charged with bribery in connection with fixing Interscholastic League games. The season was shortened and at least one game a week was to be played on a school field instead of the Stadium. Officials later rolled back on that plan.
1959: It is announced that the Dillingham family is giving La Pietra, the famed Diamond Head home of Walter F. Dillingham, to Punahou School.
1983: Lava breaks out on Kilauea's east rift, beginning the ongoing eruption. It roared to life at Napau Crater with "curtain of fire" fountains of lava up to 250 feet high.
