The banner story on Jan. 3, 1928, was an accouunt of the Rainbows-Santa Clara game.

1906: Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports the Hawaii Promotion Committee is advocating a public golf links. Kapi'olani Park is suggested. The paper reports the Manoa Golf Club is open only to members and the Moanalua links allow public use but are little used because of a lack of transportation.

1936: Stevedore strike against Matson ends in Hilo.

1952: Interscholastic League takes steps to de-emphasize high school football after four people are charged with bribery in connection with fixing Interscholastic League games. The season was shortened and at least one game a week was to be played on a school field instead of the Stadium. Officials later rolled back on that plan.

1959: It is announced that the Dillingham family is giving La Pietra, the famed Diamond Head home of Walter F. Dillingham, to Punahou School.

1983: Lava breaks out on Kilauea's east rift, beginning the ongoing eruption. It roared to life at Napau Crater with "curtain of fire" fountains of lava up to 250 feet high.
