Makaha Valley fire continues to burn

Advertiser Staff

About 30 firefighters remained at the scene of a stubborn brush fire in Makaha Valley that has charred about 500 acres so far.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the fire has been contained along the lower edges of the steeply sloping terrain along Kili Drive.

"The fire crews are concentrating their efforts on some of the hot spots in the ravines and along the ridge tops," Tejada said.

The areas that continue to burn are "totally inaccessible" by foot, Tejada said.

He said the Fire Department helicopter is performing "water drops" in areas that are still ablaze and the a request has been made through the state Civil Defense agency for additional helicopters from the military.

The fire was first reported about 5 p.m. yesterday. At its peak last night, approximately 75 to 80 firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, Tejada said.

At about 8:30 p.m. the winds shifted and began to blow the flames and smoke in the makai direction.

Tejada this morning said no homes or other structures have been "seriously threatened" by the fire although fire crews stood by near the twin, high-rise towers on the west side of the valley just in case the flames began to approach the towers.

"They were never in any real danger," Tejada said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined as of this morning, Tejada said.
