University of Hawai'i slotback Davone Bess today was named to the 2005 Scripps Freshman All-America Team.

The Football Writers Association of America made the selection.

"I'm very thankful," Bess said. "I'm happy and excited. I give all of the credit to my teammates and coaches. Without them, it wouldn't happen."

Bess led the Western Athletic Conference and was fifth in the country with 7.42 catches per game. He finished the season with 89 receptions for 1,124 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Bess is one of four true freshman on the first team offense.

Two other players with Hawai'i ties — Oregon State offensive lineman Jeremy Perry (Kahuku) and Oregon lineman Max Unger (Hawai'i Prep) — also were named to the first team.
