1955: Waikiki Aquarium opens. The aquarium was authorized by the legislature in 1949 and construction began in 1953.
1956: Officials demand a ban on fireworks as the count grows for the number of injured over the recent New Year's. The total is up to 110.
1957: Henry Kaiser announces that his "Big Dome" at the Hawaiian Village will be constructed in five days, from Jan. 14-18.
1976: A group of 30 people sets out from Maui to "occupy" Kaho'olawe, then a military-controlled bombing range. Only nine actually land on the island and by nightfall, all but Walter Ritte Jr. and Dr. Emmett Aluli are removed from the island or leave voluntarily. Ritte and Aluli were arrested two days later.
