About 200 men with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment prepared to leave for Afghanistan early this morning at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe.

They are the first of four groups of Marines and sailors that will deploy for a seven-month tour of duty. Two groups of about 400 Marines will leave from Hickam Air Force Base today and another 480 will depart this weekend.

The infantry group will replace the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, also stationed in Hawai'i.

The Marines will participate in the continuing stabilization, security and counter-terror efforts underway, military officials said.

Family and friends bid farewell to their loved ones at the Kane'ohe base before they boarded buses to Hickam and their flights.
