The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team needed overtime to finally wear down Nick Fazekas and Nevada tonight.

The Rainbow Warriors overcame a career night by Fazekas in a 73-69 overtime victory over the Wolf Pack.

A crowd of 6,331 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the 'Bows improve to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Nevada, which was picked to win the WAC, dropped to 10-3 and 0-1.

Fazekas, last season's WAC Player of the Year, had career-highs of 37 points and 15 rebounds, but he did not score in overtime.

The 'Bows raced to a 66-60 lead early in overtime and then held off a Wolf Pack rally in the closing seconds to win it. "Big Matt" Gipson scored four points and had a key blocked shot during the extra five minutes.

Julian Sensley led Hawai'i with 19 points and seven rebounds. Matt Lojeski added 12 points and Gipson 10.

The game was tied at 54, 56 and 58 in the final two minutes of regulation. Kemp tied it at 58 with two free throws with 42.9 seconds remaining.

Hawai'i's Ahmet Gueye then had a chance to put the 'Bows ahead, but his shot from close range was blocked by Demarshay Johnson.

Kemp then missed a jump shot just before the final horn to send it into overtime.

The 'Bows played the final 16 minutes of the second half and overtime without senior point guard Deonte Tatum. He left the game with leg cramps. He finished with nine points and four rebounds.

Hawai'i will next play WAC road games at Louisiana Tech on Jan. 12 and then at New Mexico State on Jan. 14.

Marcelus Kemp added 18 points for Nevada.
