Recycling drive at Pali temple

The Hongwanji Mission School's eighth-graders will hold a beverage container recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 14 in the parking lot of the Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin at 1727 Pali Highway.

Donations will help pay for the students' study tour in Japan in May.

They will accept beverage containers made of glass, plastic and aluminum with the "HI-5" imprint. The entrance to the parking lot is on Lusitana Street.

Another beverage container recycling drive is scheduled for Feb. 18. For more information, call Ed and Nikki Thompson at 330-6845.

DANCE CONCERTS SET FOR JAN. 21-22

The University of Hawai'i will present "Writing in the Sky," a public performance of the Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 and 4 p.m. Jan. 22 at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre.

Reserved tickets range from $15 to $25 and may be purchased from UH ticket outlets or at www.etickethawaii.com or charged by phone at 944-2697. For disability access and other information, call 956-8246.

Schaffer and Stern are known for their dances and performances about math.

"Writing in the Sky" gathers the best of the ensemble's work, including a dance exploring Chinese legends about the origins of flight as told through the use of oversized tangrams or Chinese puzzles.

STRAUB PROGRAM OPEN TO STUDENTS

Straub Foundation is accepting applications for the eight-week 2006 Summer Student Research Program, which takes place June 19 to Aug. 11.

Through the program, a limited number of college undergraduates interested in a career in medicine will undergo a comprehensive introduction to clinical research. The eight to 10 competitively selected college students will receive hands-on experience.
