On Jan. 6, 1898, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on the new Pali road, which was to open soon.

1866: The first leprosy patients are taken to Kalawao, Moloka'i.

1895: Rebellion against the Republic of Hawai'i begins when there is resistance during a search for arms.

1919: Former President Teddy Roosevelt dies.

1927: Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on the sale of six lots fronting Kalakaua Avenue on the 'ewa side of Saratoga Road. A realty manager commented it showed the growing importance of Waikiki and the value of Waikiki property. The land sold for $1.80 a square foot.

1942: The U.S. Navy announces that at least 20 Japanese aircraft were shot down on Dec. 7, 1941, and perhaps 12 more were downed. It was the first official announcement of Japanese air casualties in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

1949: Mauna Loa erupts for the first time in seven years. One flow came close to Honaunau, two separate flows are reported.
