Ex-pro pitcher Sasaki returns for baseball clinic tomorrow

The second annual Kazuhiro Sasaki baseball clinic is scheduled for tomorrow at Kaimuki High School field.

The clinic, conducted by Iolani coach Dean Yonamine, is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sasaki, a former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and Yokohama BayStars, is scheduled to make an appearance.

Sasaki, who was the 2000 American League rookie of the year, retired from professional baseball last year.

GYMNASTICS

PARADISE MEET BEGINS

About 250 athletes are scheduled to compete in the Gymnastics in Paradise Invitational Meet today through Sunday at 'Aiea District Park Gymnasium.

The event, hosted by Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics, includes 16 teams from Australia, California, Washington, Texas, Minnesota and Hawai'i.

The meet begins at 5:30 p.m. today, 9 a.m. tomorrow and 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The elite Junior Olympic Level 10 gymnasts will compete at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

ALOHA GYMFEST SET

More than 400 competitors from Hawai'i, the continental United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are scheduled to compete at the Aloha Gymfest, Jan. 13 to 15, at Kailua High School gym.

The Aloha Gymfest, which features competitors at levels 4 to 10, including elite, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Top-level and elite gymnasts will compete at 6 p.m. Jan. 14. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children on Jan. 14 and 15. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children on Jan. 13 (6 p.m. start).

SOFTBALL

MAKULE LEAGUE, TOURNEY

The Makule Kinipopo is starting a new season of senior softball slowpitch competition.

League play is at Central O'ahu Regional Park every Friday, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Men, 55 and older, can join teams from Honolulu, Kailua, Makaha and Waialua.

Entry fee is $10. Initial registration closes at the end of this month.

The league also is sponsoring a Senior Softball World Championship Tournament Qualifier, Feb. 17 to 19 at CORP.

Entry fee is $250. The fee is waved for teams not trying to qualify. Deadline is Jan. 16.
